Hotspot Management at Sime Darby Plantation

Sime Darby Plantation strictly practises a zero burning policy throughout our operations since 1985, and was recognised by the United Nations (Environment Programme’s Global 500 Roll of Honour) for Environmental Achievement in 1992.

However, in areas where there are communities and smallholders occupying parts of our concession area, communities plant cash crops as well as oil palm and fires may occur in these areas.

While we take all necessary precautions to prevent community fires from spreading to estate areas, in some cases, fires occurring on peat soil or mineral soil may spread to our operations. Peat fire can travel undetected underground while on mineral soil, winds can blow sparks into our planted area. In this events, we respond immediately to contain and put out the fire.

Detailed reports of our actions on a case by case basis can be found at each of the hotspot incidence.
