Safety is of paramount importance to us. At Sime Darby Plantation, we strive for safety excellence, not only for our employees but also their families, the contractors who work for us and local communities in the areas of our operations. We have put in place various measures to improve our safety performance and inculcate a safety culture within our operations. 


Transportation Safety
Apart from enhancing the competencies of drivers/ operators through the TDCC, OST (for tractor drivers), the company also reviewed transportation contracts, conducted contractor briefings, and increased enforcement efforts. By embarking on Commuting Safety Programme, it will enhance the awareness of safe driving behavior particularly the importance of defensive driving practices and compliance to road safety. 

Mill Machinery Safety
In order to reduce the LTI cases reported from the operation of mill machineries, few improvement actions were taken that includes;
  1. Improving the Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) standards
  2. Development of Model Mills
  3. Development of Mill of the Future
Harvesting Safety
Sime Darby Plantation recorded that the highest occupational incidents occurred during harvesting and pruning operations. Thus, the company has developed the Harvesting Competency Training Programme (HCTP) to enhance the competency of workers, especially cutters and pruners in harvesting activities.

Chemical Safety
In view of high safety and health risks posed by certain chemicals, the company has marked a very significant milestone in its sustainability journey by eliminating WHO Class 1B chemicals as well as those additional chemicals listed in the Rotterdam or Stockholm conventions from the operations and substituted them with safer chemicals. 

In addition, the management actively communicates hazard information to chemical handlers by conducting safe chemical handling trainings. These trainings equip the workers with awareness on hazardous substances and knowledge on the safe use of chemicals at work. 

Occupational Health Hygiene (OHH)
In order to manage the exposure of noise hazards towards employees and contractor, the Hearing Conservation Programme was introduced. The company also working together with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) & Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to review the Ergonomic Risk Assessments and to study the usage of Tanizawahelmets (shorter lids) for harvesters, especially when harvesting tall palms. 

Engineering & Construction Safety
We believe that Engineering and Construction Safety is crucial in our daily operation. We make sure that the risks to safety and health during the construction stage and during subsequent use and maintenance, shall be identified and significantly reduced. Since early 2015, we have developed and implemented Design Safety Guidelines to monitor and ensure safety performance at engineering project sites.

The documents provide guidelines to design structures and buildings as per best safety practices, Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) standards and regulations, as well as Factories and Machinery Act (FMA) requirements. 

Contractor Safety
The company concern on safety & health of the project begins during Vendor Recruitment Exercise, which is starting from the tendering process until the end of the project or work contract. It is compulsory for all the contractors to attend the project kick-off meeting before the start of any new work contract regardless of routine operation works, building operation works or engineering construction.

Flood Preparedness & Response Plan (FPRP)
FPRP is an initiative in dealing with the risk of flood which can affect company's operation in Malaysia. This plan will enhance readiness and coordination at every operating unit, identify resources required and raise awareness of the hazards and risks associated with the flood.

Empowerment & Enhancement
Sime Darby Plantation strives to enhance ownership and accountability in implementing ESH policies and procedures in operations. These initiatives includes;
  1. Introduction to Operational Safety & Health (OSH) Index as part of the KPI at every function and level
  2. Continuous Training Programme for Managers, ESH Management Representatives, and ESH Committee members at every OU
  3. Assessment of adequacy of controls in key operational risk areas
  4. Issuance of Stop Work Order (SWO) in situations where risks are intolerable
SIME (Spot, Intervene, Modify, Execute) Programme 
SIME is a program specifically designed to speed up the evolvement of the safety culture at work, where safety concerns are raised by employees for management actions. Concerns raised were related to near miss incidents, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions.

ESH Townhall
It is an open dialogue and sharing session between workers, contractors and the management. It is conducted every six months at all of company's operations. This programme helps in raising issues faced by workers directly to the management.

ESH Compliance
This is certainly an area of concern and the company has made the necessary provisions to (1) enhance the technological for effluent treatment by targeting to have Zero-Discharge-Mills by 2020, (2) enhance the capabilities of people through the Certified Environmental Professional in the Treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (CePPOME), Schedule Waste (CePSWAM) and Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems Operation (CePIETSO) programme.

Corrective & Preventive Actions (CAPA) Monitoring
For all major incidents, Operating Unit shall review its risk control and implement all corrective and preventive actions identified in the incident investigation report. The corrective and preventive action shall be closed once the commitments have been implemented and evidence is provided for confirmation.

Business Continuity Management (BCM)
BCM is defined as a holistic management process that identifies potential threats to an organization and the impacts to business operations. Sime Darby’s BCM Framework consists of 4 main components which are (1) Emergency Response & Preparedness (EPR), (2) Crisis Communications Plan (CCP), (3) Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) and (4) Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

Integrated Management System (IMS)
Sime Darby Plantation's Sustainability Integrated Management Systems (SIMS) Manual is intended to integrate, facilitate and standardize the implementation of an Integrated Management Systems at both the Division and Operating Units level as well as to demonstrate compliance with legal requirements and the requirements of Sime Darby Group’s GPA, sustainability policies and the international Management Systems requirements.
