Research and Development

Overview
Sime Darby Plantation has been at the forefront of agriculture research and development since early 1900s. We have made considerable contributions in developing and pioneering best management practices in the oil palm industry and in many instances, assisted in commercialising them. Some of our most significant contributions include the award winning zero burning replanting technique, leading management practices on water conservation and irrigation, stewardship in Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and the conversion of Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) and Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) into compost for plantations.

Sime Darby Plantation also became a pioneer in successfully sequencing, assembling and annotating the oil palm genome. With this breakthrough, we are ready to revolutionise the process of oil palm breeding.
Achievements
Calix 600 
Superior yielding Oil Palms originating from elite parental lines. 

Sime Darby’s Calix 600 oil palm seed comes with highly advanced characteristics as it is bred from elite parental lines –Deli Dura as the mother palm and AVROS Pisifera as the father palm. The seed gives early or better yields, up to 10 tonnes per ha/year after 24 to 36 months of field planting. The homogenous growth of the seeds improves the efficiency of field operations.

  • Calix 600 is produced from years of scientific research excellence gathered from Guthrie, Golden Hope and Sime Darby originating from elite parental lines
  • Its superior oil yield could produce up to 10mt/ha/yr with an earlier production of fresh fruit bunch (FFB)
  • Calix 600 promises high early yield, thin shell, thick mesocarp. Its homogenous growth provides more efficient field operations
  • Calix 600 offers unprecedented quality and superior oil yield as far as oil palm plantation is concerned.

 
Enzyme Technology to Tailor Fat Functionality

We are continuously aiming for new formulations based on healthier vegetable oils and fats that have the right nutritional balance and simultaneously provide the desired taste and texture of foods. Sime Darby Plantation uses modern enzyme technology to tailor functional properties of vegetable oils. This technology is mainly used to manufacture high quality hardstocks for application in consumer spreads and bakery margarines. The enzyme technology is 'greener' as it uses less energy, does not use chemicals and eliminates waste water.


 
Sime Darby R&D Laboratory Services Recognized as World-Class

Lab services was awarded the Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) President Laboratory Award for 2014. The award is the most prestigious one handed out by IKM and is bestowed upon the lab that has demonstrated excellent achievement in the practice of chemistry. SDR Labs was nominated in the highly competitive Laboratories from Industry category where it won against competition such as Petronas Labs.

Sime Darby Seeds & Agricultural Services Sdn Bhd (SDSAS)

Sime Darby Seeds & Agricultural Services Sdn Bhd (SDSAS) is one of the world leader’s in superior quality oil palm seed production, and aside from its leading calix 600 seed, SDSAS also produces a wide variety of high quality seed varieties, such as GH500, Guthrie DxP and HRU DxP.

SDSAS production processes follow the stringent guidelines of ISO 9001: 2000 Quality Management Systems, from controlled pollination right up to the dispatch of carefully selected germinated seeds to our customers.

SDSAS also works closely with Sime Darby Plantation’s Research & Development team to provide the advisory and consultancy services as our effort to develop the country’s oil palm industry. The scope of services in advisory and consultancy includes:

  • Agronomy services for fertilizer recommendation
  • Planting Advisory services
  • Palm Oil Mill Advisory services
  • Plantation Evaluation studies
  • Laboratory Analytical services

Currently, we cover 272,170 ha on Agronomic and Planting Advisory services to external customer.
  • Oil Palm Seeds Production In Indonesia
    Currently our Plantation arm in Indonesia, Minamas, imports from 50% to 100% of its required oil palm seed from SDSAS, with the remaining amount sourced from local Indonesian companies. In order to bolster the productivity of our Indonesian estates and reduce operating cost, it is critical for Minamas to have the capability to produce high quality oil palm planting materials locally. Sime Darby has initiated a collaboration with the Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI) to produce seeds from Indonesian produced fresh fruit bunches (FFBs) for use by our Indonesian estates.

  • Oil Palm Seeds To Liberia
    SDSAS also supplies seeds to our estate in Liberia, which currently is still in its early stages of development. Plans are underway to ensure that our Liberia estate will continue to have a steady supply of seeds for the development of the 220,000 hectares of available landbank.
