Upstream Operation
Sime Darby Plantation is one of the world’s largest palm oil producers. The company produces approximately 2.4 million tonnes or four per cent of the world’s crude palm oil (CPO) output annually, of which about 97% or 2.2 million tonnes are Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). Its annual output of palm kernel is about 0.57 million tonnes, out of which 0.56 million tonnes are Certified Sustainable Palm Kernel (CSPK).

Our current Upstream operations, which consist predominantly of oil palm cultivation, harvesting and milling are spread across more than 600,000 hectares of planted areas in Malaysia, Indonesia, Liberia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. Our land bank currently stands at 1 million hectares across these five countries.

Sime Darby Plantation is involved in the manufacturing and distribution of oils and fats products, oleochemicals and palm oil-based biodiesel, as well as fast moving consumer goods.

The company’s downstream operations, where refining of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) is undertaken for edible oils and fats products, oleochemicals and biodiesel, as well as its marketing activities, are present in 16 countries.

Sime Darby Renewables was established in 2014 to leverage on the potential value-added benefits along the oil palm value chain that moves beyond the current and traditional range of palm oil products. The unit aims to to create a portfolio of sustainable businesses in the industrial biotechnology space.

Sime Darby Renewables strives to co-invest with reputable strategic partners to ensure successful commercialisation of its cluster of companies. In line with this aim, in 2014, the unit acquired a significant stake in Verdezyne Inc., a California based industrial biotechnology company with proprietary technologies to competitively produce chemicals intermediates derived from sustainable materials.
