RSPO Certification
The rapid expansion of oil palm plantations to meet the global demand for edible oils has caused the industry stakeholders to initiate measures to ensure the sustainability of the commodity.
Sime Darby is one of the founding members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which was founded in 2004 with the objective of promoting the growth and use of sustainable palm oil products through credible global standards and engagement with stakeholders.
Sime Darby Plantation adheres strongly to the RSPO Principles & Criteria which form the basis of the RSPO certification, and takes into account not only good agricultural practices but also responsible social and environmental management. The certification will ensure plantation companies carry out their businesses the sustainable way.
The RSPO has eight principles, 39 criteria and national specific indicators. The standard aims to ensure:
- that no primary forests or other high conservation value areas are cleared for new oil palm plantations;
- that oil palm plantations minimize their environmental footprint; and
- that the basic rights of local land owners, farm workers and indigenous people are fully respected.
